SAR automated the under body protection line at BMW Regensburg as the turnkey supplier.

Under body protection for the longevity of vehicles

All areas of a vehicle body that are endangered by stone chipping, especially the under body and wheel housings, receive a PVC protective coating. Without this protection, the lacquering could be damaged and corrosion would be pre-programmed.

Modernization and Extension

An existing UBS line in the paint shop was modernized, a second completely new line added. The assignment contained the following:

• Renewal and extension of the existing materials handling system, an electric monorail system (EMS)
• Cycle time improvement and optimisation of the existing robot cells
• Additional robot cells for line 2, new manual stations and an analysis station

As part of this project, the existing 29 tilting hangers were removed from the system and replaced by 40 new fixed hangers, which had to be compatible to the old and new robot programmes in respect of geometry and measurements, requiring the highest precision. The speed was also increased from 60m/min to 80m/min.

New robot cells, manual stations and analysis station

An additional 4 robot cells had to be set up for the second line. All manual stations were re done, big hoisting platforms now allow for ergonomic working on the chassis. An analysis station for the final inspection of the bodies was created.

Ventilation system completely replaced

On the ventilation technology side, the supply air and extraction systems of lines 1 and 2 were completely replaced by SAR. A completely new cabin line 2 was set up.

Best Solution

The new installations and changed systems could be commissioned in time, the deadlines met. We thank BMW for the good co-operation during the complete run of the project.
